Metal detecting is an increasingly popular hobby – and not just for elderly people over 70 years, like it was once perceived! Many younger people are loving the idea of finding ‘lost treasure’ and to be honest, it is not that difficult because you would be amazed at just how much metal is hidden in the ground – 
This metal detector is really easy to assemble and comes with a clear and detailed instruction book in English, French & German (save yourself valuable time by reading these first!) and also has a portable storage case and well-made shovel. The Sakobs metal detector is run on alkaline batteries and these are non-rechargeable, but to be honest, I was surprised how well they lasted. You will need to buy two 9 volt batteries and it really does pay to buy a quality brand such as Duracell.
The most important part of the metal detector is its coil and this model has a good-sized search coil – 10 inches (25cm) in diameter – which means that it is nice and sensitive and will easily locate even the smallest coins on the periphery of its range. Importantly, the coil is waterproof so this makes the metal detector nice and versatile as you can use it along river banks, on the beach and in both fresh and saltwater – but will need to five the coil a good rinse afterward. If you are wondering how deep the detector can detect metal, the depth is about 8.7 inches (about 22 cm) which is actually deeper than many other models and there are three different levels of sensitivity you can choose from to suit your particular needs.
If you haven’t done metal detecting before, it may take a little while to get the hang of the display screen and the different sounds, but they are both easy to master and importantly, are accurate. The display screen is nice and clear and there are very different sounds to let you know what different metals have been detected such as iron or aluminium. The sounds made on detection of each metal are easy to differentiate. There are three different modes to choose from. The first will notify you of any types of metal the detector finds in the ground, the second mode will only react if it detects one of several different metals that you have selected and the third mode will mean that the detector will only search for one particular metal you are interested in finding.

A great feature is that a red light comes on when the battery is about to die (it is well worth carrying spares just in case). What is a real bonus is that the display can still be read at night or in somewhere where there is limited light- for example, in a cave.
As I was having great success each tie I went out with my new metal detector, it soon captured my son’s imagination, which was not a problem, but I was not convinced that he would be able to handle the detector easily. I needn’t have worried. We found the detector easy to adjust to fit him (he is 12 years old and average height for his age). The many part is the long arm of the detector which was too long but this was easy to reduce in length. I think though that it might not be suitable for younger children as the arm does not reduce too much in length and compared to my friend’s detector, my Sakobs is slightly heavier. I use my own headset so that was fine and they fitted easily into the jack point on the detector. Liam found the detector comfortable to use and we are now going out every Sunday together which is great because I enjoy his company, although there is good camaraderie between detectorists and they will always help you if you get stuck.
The Sakobs metal detector is certainly a really good choice for beginners but the big bonus is that it is equally good for professionals too, making it a really good buy.
Most people enjoy metal detecting as it is as exciting as a treasure hunt and you never know what you are going to find and it is a good way to keep fit as you walk miles. Some people do metal detecting to earn money and because this model is very sensitive, I think it would be a good one to buy. I think it is good value for money anyway and I have found plenty of interesting coins, toy cars and some jewellery. My friend quipped that all the metal I have found so far could be sold for scrap and I could easily get more than what I paid for the Sakobs – good point, I like it!
